There are many studies that observe the effects of the marital relationship on the effectiveness of spouses in parenting. However, how does parenting, the actual caring for one’s offspring, influence the marriage? Among a sample of over 1100 Chinese mothers, factors such as a strong co-parenting bond, greater satisfaction with the father’s contribution in parenting, and lower parenting stress all were highly associated with the mother’s marital satisfaction. The study did not address factors that contribute to the father’s satisfaction. Yet, this finding supports the “spillover” effect, suggesting that a positive experience in parenting will have a beneficial impact on the satisfaction of spouses.
