5 Parenting Strategies to Help Delay/Reduce Your Adolescent’s Alcohol Use

A panel of 38 experts in the area of drug and alcohol treatment  were polled to determine the best strategy to postpone adolescent drinking.  At least 90% of the panel endorsed 289 parenting strategies that would be helpful to eliminate or reduce adolescent alcohol consumption. These strategies fall into 11 different categories, including:

  • modeling responsible drinking
  • establishing family rules
  • monitoring adolescents when unsupervised
  • preparing adolescents for peer pressure
  • establishing and maintaining a good parent-child relationship
